- Newcomers! How To Use APAS Despite Frog's Flood
This group is being flooded by an idiot known as Frog.
There are ways around this problem.
You can use a "troll-free" private news server which
has the flooded junk pretty much filtered out.
There are two of these.
nntp server name: bananasplit.info
port: 119
nntp server name: frell.eu.org
port:119
(You probably don't have to reset the port
number in your newsreader or browser. Port 119
is the most common port used for news service.
Just enter the server name in the News Server
box of your browser or newsreader.)
Bananasplit also has NNTPS (secure posting)
More info on this more complicated method
is here: http://www.bananasplit.info/news.html
You can also use a superb program that allows you
to filter using Free Agent, Outlook or any other
non-filtering newsreader. It also allows you to
filter with any browser.
None of the above need any filtering capability
outside of the outboard filtering method I outline
on the pages below:
http://www.cotse.net/users/bluejay/nfilter/nfilter.html
The above method is so simple the most "technically
challenged" can be filtering in short order.
Having filtering is an absolute necessity for reading apas.
Here are some other choices.
Xnews is a freebie newsreader. you can get it here.
(Most people do find it rather confusing to use.)
http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/otr/xnewsbin.html
Here are two groups where you can get help using Xnews:
news.software.newsreaders
news.software.readers
Another filtering newsreader is Agent.
It is the most popular newsreader and much easier to
use than Xnews. It is not free. The price is $29.00 (US).
There is a free 30 day trial version, after which Agent
will revert to Free Agent. Free Agent does not have
filtering capability.
You can get the trial download of Agent here:
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/index.php
Here is a group devoted entirely to Agent:
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent
Here is my page on how to use Agent's Global Filtering.
http://www.cotse.net/users/bluejay/frog/agent-filter-wrapped.txt
Do NOT use the free newsreader that Frog has. He is
the one flooding this group. You can learn more about
this by reading my "The Frog Who Would Be King" page.
